Starburst is a big data customer analytics platform built around distributed SQL querying across multiple data sources without moving or copying the data. I'd recommend it if your team needs to analyze customer data that lives across different systems, like data warehouses, data lakes, or operational databases, and centralizing it all isn't realistic. It's worth choosing over Databricks if your priority is querying data where it already lives rather than building a centralized lakehouse, since Starburst handles cross-source federation more natively than Databricks does.

Starburst Overview

In my opinion, Starburst is a strong data analytics platform, especially if you value flexibility and powerful enterprise-grade features. Its customizable data integration tools are impressive, but the platform does come with a steep learning curve that can affect usability early on. The onboarding experience isn’t the most intuitive. However, once you’re fully set up, Starburst delivers reliable, high-level performance.

As an advanced data analysis tool, Starburst is best suited for teams willing to invest time in mastering a more complex system and who require a platform capable of handling sophisticated data workloads. However, if exceptional customer support is a priority, you may find it falls a bit short compared to other high-performance solutions.

Pros

  • You can query data across multiple apps and sources.
  • Your team gets real-time insights with its fast query engine.
  • It supports SQL, making it easy for your team to use existing skills.

Cons

  • Your team might face a steep learning curve initially.
  • It can be resource-intensive, requiring significant infrastructure.
  • You might find its documentation lacking in depth for complex use cases.
